In order to keep up with the certification demands as the industry continually evolves, the Association of Boards of Certification (ABC) and the Certification Commission for Environmental Professionals (C2EP) need talented professionals such as you to volunteer as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for various committees and task forces.

Are you a certified operator, an environmental trainer, a certification officer, an environmental regulator,
and/or an engineer? Additionally, do you have at least five years of experience within these listed fields? If
you answered yes to both of these questions, you have what it takes to volunteer with C2EP!

Who may participate?
Certified operators, environmental trainers, certification officers, environmental regulators, engineers, and other industry stakeholders with at least five years of experience in the water environment industry.
Certified water treatment, water distribution, wastewater collection, and wastewater treatment operators with at least five years of experience in the water environment industry.
Certified water treatment, water distribution, wastewater collection, and wastewater treatment operators with at least five years of experience in the water environment industry.  (Eligibility determined by the task assigned).
Overview
ABC’s Certification Commission for Environmental Professionals (C2EP) administers certifications for operators in the water treatment, water distribution, wastewater collection, and wastewater treatment disciplines.  Each of these disciplines (schemes) is developed and maintained by a corresponding Scheme Committee of industry experts who work alongside C2EP to provide the only internationally-recognized certification of its kind.
Under the supervision of ABC’s Certification Commission for Environmental Professionals (C2EP), review and write new certification exam items, develop exam forms, and maintain exam item banks. Work with ABC’s Board of Directors, Scheme Committees, and other Exam Development Subcommittees to provide quality certification examination products for ABC’s Testing Service and Voluntary Certification Program, resources utilized by more than 40 states, 10 Canadian provinces, and additional international programs.
Under the supervision of ABC’s Certification Commission for Environmental Professionals (C2EP), work on critical industry projects requiring subject matter expertise such as the identification of essential knowledge and job skills of your profession, beta testing of certification exams, and the development of water/wastewater system classification mechanisms.  Projects vary, are of short duration, and occur throughout the year.  Volunteers may choose whether or not to participate in each project as it becomes available.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of C2EP Voluntary Certification Program policies and standards which include subjects such as:
    •  certification eligibility requirements
    •  recertification requirements
    • continuing education relevancy criteria
    • code of conduct
  •  Oversee program administration and as needed:
    • provide expert opinion to application review
    • participate in appeals processing
    • develop technical certification program materials
  • Acquire item writing and exam development skills through training provided by C2EP and psychometric support partners.
  • Participate in certification exam development and maintenance activities including:
    • exam item review for continued industry relevance
    • exam item authoring on emerging technologies/processes
    • job task analysis
    • need-to-know criteria (exam specifications) development
    • certification exam form assembly
    • exam passing score establishment

Specific project responsibilities will be provided to Technical Committee/Taskforce members prior to project commencement. Responsibilities may include:

  • development and/or completion of surveys identifying the essential job knowledge and skills of your profession
  • development and/or completion of surveys identifying the technologies and processes found in facilities and systems
  • proctored completion of a draft exam form
  • participation in one-to-two-day in-person meetings on various industry topics
  • participation in one-to-two-hour webinars/conference calls on various industry topics
Time Commitment Scheme Committee members should expect occasional one-hour conference calls/webinars during business hours and regular email correspondence. Scheme Committee members are expected to attend all face-to-face meetings which may be conducted as frequently as once a year.  Scheme Committee members should expect to spend up to one hour to prepare for meetings. Exam Development Subcommittee members should expect quarterly one-to-two-hour conference calls/webinars during business hours with occasional email correspondence.  Exam Development Subcommittee members are expected to attend all face-to-face meetings which may be conducted as frequently as once a year. Technical Committee/Taskforce members’ time commitments and duties are dependent on the specific task assigned.  Projects will likely consist of regular conference calls/webinar and email correspondence or an individual project that can be completed within a day’s time. Technical Committee/Taskforce members are only required to complete their assigned tasks, after which the Committee/Taskforce is disbanded.  Volunteers may continue to serve on future Technical Committees/Taskforces.
Required Resources Scheme Committee members should be computer literate and have access to a computer and a reliable internet connection.  Scheme Committee members should be able to devote time for conference calls, travel for meetings, and assigned work. Exam Development Subcommittee members should be computer literate and have access to a computer and a reliable internet connection.  Exam Development Subcommittee members should be able to devote time for conference calls, travel for meetings, and assigned work. Volunteers should be computer literate and have access to a computer and a reliable internet connection.  Volunteers will be provided with specific time, resource, and/or travel requirements for any proposed project, and should ensure his/her ability to fulfill the requirements prior to committing to the project.
