Engineers, accountants, and countless other professionals have long had the opportunity to earn designations that let their industry peers, their customers, and the public know they have mastered the most rigorous standards of their respective industries. Water and wastewater operators have not had that same opportunity–until now.
ABC’s Certification Commission for Environmental Professionals (C2EP) proudly introduces the Professional Operator (PO) designation for C2EP certified water treatment, distribution, collection, and wastewater treatment operators. The PO designation is a unique offering, built upon international operator certification best practices that represent the critical skills and knowledge universal to operators anywhere in the world and ensure a rigorous and transparent certification process.
The process to earn this professional designation and certification requires:
1. Submittal and approval of a certification application documenting the operator’s experience and education in accordance with the requirements outlined in the chart below,
2. Sitting for and passing the new standardized exam,
3. Disclosing any disciplinary action related to the operator’s certification, and
4. Adhering to a code of conduct.

Eligible candidates have the convenience of testing nearly anywhere in the world at a location, date, and time of their preference. Those who pass the exam will receive C2EP certification and be designated as “Professional Operators.” Certified persons will also receive supporting documentation and a commissioned pin they can wear to identify themselves as Professional Operators. This designation can be used by those who have earned it for identification purposes and use on all professional communications.
Though this is a voluntary opportunity, earning this designation signifies your commitment to the profession and expertise in the industry, thereby boosting not only your professional stature as an operator, but the credibility and public reputation of the organizations you represent.
